MIAD INDUSTRIAL DESIGN PROJECT
"The De-stresso"
OVERVIEW:Title: "The DeStresso"
Dimensions: 19x29 in DPI 200 Medium: PhotoPea Date: December 2023 EXHIBITION TEXT
I created the DeStresso to help students like myself feel less stressed at school and maybe even boost their grades a bit. My original inspiration for my invention was a mix between a coffee machine and a vending machine. The DeStresso has five different stress levels which when selected come with a complementary drink. Using photopea was a first for me, I haven't really created something online too many times before so I'm still getting used to the program. Creating two posters required patience and time, I learned to be okay with leaving out tedious details.

INSPIRATION
My initial idea was to create a coffee machine for my locker, so I looked up different styles of coffee machines and found the design I liked (above on the right). At my school we have end lockers that have garbage cans inside them, my idea was tho create a coffee vending machine for these end lockers. Students could pay and get their drink, the only twist was that the coffee machine I invented creates drinks based off of stress levels. I used the same design as the average coffee machine and drew out what that might look like inside a locker. I later added the buttons, change dispenser, and cash/debit/credit payment options which were inspired by the average vending machine. The way my invention works is you open the locker, grab a cup from the drawer, press which stress level you are currently, put your money in, then wait while your drink is prepared. Depending on the stress level, this drink could be coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.
PLANNING
These are my stress levels (planning phase), I decided on five levels of stress since that usually is the range in which students are asked how high their stress level is, with the help of my friend (Ellia Greewald) I created the drinks that are associated with each stress level.

To the left was my initial planning sketch, I used the same concepts as a basic coffee machine but placed this concept inside of a locker
Above is the exterior beside an interior view of my invention. In this model I still had the plug attached in the back, this design was later taken out of my final product.

PROCESS
I started with this sketch that I drew out on white paper and used the magic cut tool to make it a PNG, I left some shadow on the bottom to give it depth and dimension. Once I was comfortable with the design (which I tried to make look like a coffee shop design) I moved it to my final board
|
I downloaded a png silhouette of a woman and placed her proportionately next to the sketch of my invention, I used the free transform tool to move around and reshape my objects.
My final process was to write everything in and put the title on the piece, I kept things very simplistic because I wanted to make the poster a little more professional. I re-centered the woman and DeStresso machine so that it was the main focus of the poster. Around this time my WIFI went out and I lost my progress, so I had to use a screenshot of this portion and continue on.

POSTER 1
I started by stating my problem statement and placing a picture of my initial sketch of my invention. I used different sized fonts to make it easier to see what statements belonged to which sections
|
I then added my objective, this was an extension of the problem statement I made earlier. I again used different sized fonts to create a sub header and body paragraph.
|
Next I added my existing solutions and wrote reasons for why these solutions are not better solutions than my invention. I tried to make the images similar size so that the poster looked more put together and sophisticated.
|
EXPERIMENTATION
I experimented with the font and sizing of the letters in my title, subtitles, and body paragraphs. This was a text box feature, there were many fonts to choose from but I decided on a font that looked like coffee shop writing to really sell my idea of a coffee shop/locker/vending machine.
I started with a really large "What is it?" section but quickly realized that I wanted more of the visual element than the written word. My WIFI did this for me and decided to reset as I was making this portion which caused me to restart the entire thing, it was a good thing however as I discovered the "magic cut" option which helped me cut out my sketch of the DeStresso.
|
This was the poster before it got deleted because of my WIFI, I had used the magic wand tool to cut out a different sketch than the one I used in my final poster. The magic wand tool left a discolored look that I didn't like at all so when the poster was removed I discovered the magic cut tool which was much easier to use and had a much cleaner cut result.

CRITIQUE
I think I've created a perfect mix of a coffee machine and a vending machine. The things I made sure to keep from the vending machine was the satisfying buttons and the money section. I really like what I call the "vending machine escape button" which is the button you press when nothing is happening and you want your money back, I also made sure to have both a cash and credit/debit option. For the coffee machine, I kept the basic design down, I also tried to keep my design simple since I never know how to use other peoples coffee machines, the DeStresso is simple to use and easily installable, much like the average coffee machine. The main differences are the fact that there are buttons to press which makes the drinks fresh for the person using it. This design was created for students mostly, so I did include coffee, tea, and hot chocolate options. The whole point was to bring up students spirits so in the original sketches I made I used brighter colors unlike a coffee machine or vending machine.
REFLECTION
Overall, this project was really challenging for me, I don't really like making things online, even though it's a good skill to have. Making two posters was frustrating especially when my WIFI cut out, but I really like the idea of created posters based off of ideas I have. Writing down my thoughts and creative brainstorming was really fun because I feel like I will have an easier time communicating my thoughts to the people watching my presentation at MIAD. One of my favorite parts of this project was the ideation, drawing on the whiteboards and communicating my ideas to my peers was really fun because they all had feedback and good things to say. This project was the first time I felt like I was actually in a collage preparing course, I felt like I was at my job and I loved it. Using photopea was a new experience for me but my friends told me it was a lot like Photoshop and I realized it was, it was pretty easy to use and didn't have many problems.
ACT
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
- My inspiration for this invention was a coffee vending machine, much like the ones I see everyday, I created a stress relieving coffee/vending machine to help my fellow students
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
- The vending machine is commonly used to get cheap snacks at public places and a coffee machine is used in a household to make a variety of coffee drinks
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
- Schools would buy this product to better support their students since students are commonly stressed at school
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?.
- Students environments are often stressful especially as they get to junior and senior year, they need a new element to their environment to lessen the stress
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
- People look for something to be excited for in places where they aren't as excited to go
